Diabetic Neuropathy can be treated. Alpha lipoic acid, a powerful antioxidant, has been shown to decrease pain and improve sensation in affected limbs. As an added benefit, it may help improve blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetics.

Alpha lipoic acid increases insulin sensitivity. Triglyceride accumulation in skeletal muscle contributes to insulin resistance in obesity. ALA reduces body weight and prevents development of diabetes in diabetes-prone obese rats by reducing triglyceride accumulation in non-adipose tissues.

Short-term hyperglycemia produces oxidative damage and apoptosis in neurons. Neurons in culture die through programmed cell death when exposed to elevated glucose. Application of alpha lipoic acid potently prevents glucose-induced oxidative stress and cell death.
